Knud Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun.
The army listed him as living in Chicago, IL, age 26, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 1, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered at Madison, WI on November 15, 1861 as a Private (Menig). Olson was assigned to the Pioneer Corps on November 26, 1862. A year later, he died of chronic diarrhea at U. S. General Hospital Number 4 in Murfreesboro, TN on November 21, 1863.
