15th Wisconsin Introduction

Colonel Hans C. Heg

 “The Scandinavian Regiment”

These pages contain an important record of the men in the 15th Wisconsin Regiment, serving with the Union Army during the American Civil War. Mustered into service early in 1862, the Regiment’s soldiers were almost all emigrants from Norway, with some from Sweden or Denmark. While Norsemen served in both the Union and Confederate forces, the 15th Wisconsin Regiment was the only all-Scandinavian Regiment in either. The Regiment was mustered out of service between late 1864 and early 1865.

In 1999, Civil War historian Scott Cantwell Meeker helped organize a reunion of the descendants of those who served in the Wisconsin 15th Regiment. To support that effort, Mr. Meeker created a special website. Including photographs and genealogical information, the Meeker website grew in content and complexity. In late 2011, Mr. Meeker entrusted his project and its copyright to the Norwegian American Genealogical Center, which is now making this information available once again to a worldwide public.

We invite all those with additional information about the Regiment’s soldiers to share any information, photographs, or writings – to help us continue to build this definitive record about the heroic Scandinavian Regiment.
